Biography
Joseph Nguyễn Đình Uyển came from Ninh Cường in Nam Định. He entered church service, assisted Bishop Dominic Henares, and became a Dominican tertiary. After many years at Tiên Chu, his superiors appointed him a catechist. When persecution forced priests into hiding, the bishop entrusted the local Catholic community to Joseph's care, giving his work particular importance during the clergy's absence.
Officials searching Tiên Chu for the bishop arrested Joseph after someone recognized his religious clothing. He refused repeated efforts to force him across a cross and endured severe punishment. Although officials proposed a death sentence, illness overtook him in prison in 1838. He was canonized in 1988.
