Biography

Joseph Im Chi-baeg studied traditional literature and worked in trade before becoming a policeman. Although his wife and children were Catholic, he postponed baptism while remaining sympathetic to the community. When his son was arrested with Andrew Kim Tae-gon in 1846, Joseph sought his release and was himself imprisoned.

Meeting Andrew Kim in prison led Joseph to receive instruction and baptism from him. Family appeals and violent interrogation did not persuade him to surrender his newly professed faith. He died in the persecution of September 1846. His conversion developed within imprisonment, while his earlier efforts to protect Catholics formed part of the life that preceded it.
