Biography

Joseph Hoàng Lương Cảnh came from the village of Ván in Bắc Giang. At Thổ Hà he practiced medicine, helped those who were sick, and served as a leader of the Catholic community. He also belonged to the Dominican Third Order. His religious service included preparing and baptizing children, alongside his ordinary work as a physician.

After officials surrounded Thổ Hà, Joseph left for another village but was identified at a ferry landing. Taken to Bắc Ninh, he was imprisoned with Father Peter Nguyễn Văn Tự. He refused demands to step over a cross and prayed even for the rulers responsible for his punishment. He was beheaded in 1838 and canonized in 1988.
