Biography

Joseph Freinademetz was born in South Tyrol, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and became a priest in 1875. After parish ministry near home, he joined Arnold Janssen's missionary foundation and left for China in 1879. Preparation in Hong Kong preceded his work in Shandong.

He devoted particular attention to forming local catechists and Chinese priests, including preparing a catechetical manual in Chinese. His ministry involved learning from the people among whom he lived, not simply arriving with a ready-made program. During a typhus outbreak he continued visiting communities and became infected himself. He died in 1908 and was canonized in 2003, alongside Janssen.
