Biography

Joseph Đặng Đình Viên was born at Tiên Chu in Hưng Yên. His parents sent him to his mother's home community at Họ Vân for schooling. After their deaths he entered religious formation and was ordained at Lục Thủy. He spent many years serving Họ Bắc and regularly traveled to neighboring Catholic communities, including Đông Bài, Thiết Nam, Như Thiết, and An Mỹ.

Officials intercepted letters Joseph had written to bishops and priests, making his name a specific target for arrest. He moved among villages and provinces to evade capture while the search continued. Soldiers eventually seized him and took him to prison in Hưng Yên. He was beheaded in 1838. His beatification followed in 1900, and John Paul II canonized him in 1988.
