Biography
Joseph Chang Song-jip worked in a herb shop in Seoul and was twice widowed. He began studying Catholicism as an adult but stopped when he struggled with its teachings about the Incarnation and Christ's birth. A Catholic friend later persuaded him to resume his religious life.
Joseph turned to prayer, meditation and Scripture, and received baptism and confirmation in 1838. Arrested during the following year's persecution, he explained his beliefs to those urging him to abandon them. After beatings and continued imprisonment, he died in a Seoul prison in May 1839. The Korean bishops include him among their canonized martyrs.
