Biography
Joseph Chang Chu-gi received Catholic instruction from his sister-in-law and was baptized by Pacificus Yu. His family entered the Church, and Pierre Maubant later appointed him a catechist. Living at Baeron, Joseph offered his house for the seminary opened by Ambroise Maistre in 1855.
He continued serving the seminary as a caretaker without payment. During the 1866 persecution he was arrested, briefly released through a missionary's efforts, and captured again. He acknowledged his connection with the seminary and refused to renounce Catholicism. He was executed at Galmaemot in March. His contribution provided a material home for the formation of future Korean priests.
