Biography
José María Rubio Peralta came from a farming family in Dalías and was ordained in 1887. Although he wanted to become a Jesuit, responsibilities that included caring for an elderly priest delayed that step for many years. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1906 after serving in parish and seminary work.
In Madrid he became known for confession, spiritual direction, and straightforward preaching. He also encouraged lay collaborators who organized schools, vocational training, employment assistance, and care for people with illness or disabilities. His contribution included helping others discover how they could serve, not simply carrying out every task himself. He died in 1929 and was canonized in 2003.
