Biography

José Gregorio Hernández Cisneros grew up in Isnotú and studied in Caracas, eventually qualifying as a physician. In 1889 he was sent to Paris for advanced work in microbiology, bacteriology, histology and experimental physiology. On returning to Venezuela he helped introduce these subjects into university teaching.

He combined his academic career and medical practice with a committed Catholic life and membership in the Franciscan Third Order. He gave particular attention to poor patients, charging them nothing and sometimes supplying money for medicines. This practical service brought him recognition as a physician of the poor while he continued contributing to medical education. Leo XIV canonized José Gregorio Hernández Cisneros in 2025.
