Biography

José Gabriel Brochero grew up near Córdoba and was ordained in 1866. Early ministry included serving during a cholera epidemic and work in seminary education. In 1869 he took responsibility for an extensive mountain parish whose scattered inhabitants lacked roads and schools. He traveled among its communities and organized journeys to spiritual retreats.

With parishioners he built a retreat house, churches, accommodation and a school for girls. Their work also opened paths through the mountains, while his requests to authorities secured communications services. His pastoral commitment joined religious formation with improvements in everyday access to education and public infrastructure for isolated rural families. Francis canonized José Gabriel del Rosario Brochero in 2016.
