Biography
John Đoàn Trinh Hoan was born near Huế to a Catholic family engaged in farming and weaving. His uncle, a priest, guided his early preparation for church service. He spent several years studying at Penang and, after returning, helped Bishop Taberd with translation, secretarial work, and travel among Catholic communities. Bishop Cuenot ordained him during the persecution in 1836.
John's ministry eventually brought him into captivity along with the Catholic householder Matthew Nguyễn Văn Phượng, who had hosted him. Their journeys to execution met outside Quảng Bình, and both died in 1861. He was canonized in 1988.

What the recorded review covers
Individual Catholic institutional source review; original concise factual summary. AI-assisted institutional-source comparison; no qualified human review is claimed. Compared canonical and source names, aliases, clergy or lay status, family relationships and martyrdom details against all 685 baseline canonical or archived identities (625 published) and all prior directory batches. Holy See register number 57 is a distinct individual; source-name variants count as one person. The URL uses Thanh Hoan and the closing paragraph names Joseph. The heading, narrative, and Vatican individual 57 identify John Đoàn Trinh Hoan. These transcription inconsistencies do not create another person.
