Biography

John de la Lande was a French layman who assisted the Jesuits in New France. Born in Dieppe, he worked with the community at Three Rivers before volunteering to accompany Isaac Jogues on a mission connected with peace negotiations. The journey brought them into a region troubled by warfare and distrust.

They continued despite warnings and were captured near the Mohawk village where Jogues had previously been held. De la Lande died in 1646. His birth date is not established in the institutional biography, and its death-date header needs further checking. His lay status is retained here; he is not described as a priest.
