Biography

John Calabria grew up in a poor family in Verona and had to leave school to work after his father's death. Help from a priest made further study possible. While still a theology student, he took a homeless boy into his lodging, an encounter that anticipated the practical hospitality of his later ministry.

As a priest he served through confession and care for people excluded from ordinary support. In 1907 he established the Casa Buoni Fanciulli for boys in need. The men who joined this work became the Poor Servants of Divine Providence; a women's community followed. His emphasis on trust in God's providence included actively providing shelter and assistance. The Vatican records his canonization in 1999.
