Biography
John Baptist Nam Chong-sam served in Korean government positions while trying to reconcile public obligations with his Catholic faith. He eventually resigned a regional governorship, taught Korean to foreign missionaries, and later returned to court-related educational work when his finances became difficult.
A diplomatic crisis brought requests for his help contacting Bishop Berneux, but court opposition to Catholic influence contributed to renewed persecution. Nam was arrested in March 1866 and executed outside Seoul's Small West Gate. The bishops' account presents the tensions of his public responsibilities and family support rather than assuming that office and religious conviction were easily reconciled.
