Biography

Jeanne Émilie de Villeneuve was born in Toulouse and grew up near Castres. Her family’s agricultural and manufacturing interests exposed her to the hardship accompanying industrial development. After the deaths of her mother and sister, she increasingly sought religious life, although her family initially opposed the possibility.

In 1836, with her father’s permission, she and two companions began a community for poor girls in Castres. The Sisters of the Immaculate Conception developed from this foundation, with service extending to sick people, prisoners and those facing exploitation. Her ministry joined education with a deliberate concern for people whose circumstances made them vulnerable to neglect. Francis canonized Jeanne Émilie de Villeneuve in 2015.
