Biography

Jacques Chastan grew up in a French farming family and developed a desire for missionary priesthood while studying in the seminary. Ordained in 1826, he joined the Paris Foreign Missions Society. Leaving home was painful: the Korean bishops' biography describes his parents' distress at a departure that offered little prospect of reunion.

In Korea, Chastan worked with Pierre Maubant among Catholic villages, administering the sacraments and visiting isolated communities. Following Bishop Imbert's direction during the persecution of 1839, he surrendered with Maubant. The three missionaries were imprisoned and executed at Saenamteo. His story preserves the personal costs as well as the pastoral work of missionary life.
