Biography
Jacques Berthieu served as a diocesan priest in France before entering the Jesuits in 1873. He sailed for Madagascar two years later. At Sainte Marie he worked to learn the local language while teaching catechism, visiting Christians and preparing people for the sacraments. He also assisted sick people and supported schooling and agricultural work.
Expulsion orders repeatedly disrupted his ministry and forced him to leave mission stations. He continued serving communities amid conflict rather than abandoning their pastoral needs. In 1896 he was captured and killed after refusing demands that he renounce his faith. His individual canonization recognizes a missionary life that ended in martyrdom. Benedict XVI canonized Jacques Berthieu in 2012.
