Biography

Ignatius was born Lorenzo Maurizio Belvisotti in Santhià and received his early education from a priest relative after his father’s death. Ordained in 1710, he worked as a household chaplain and tutor and participated in popular missions. He later declined appointments that offered a settled clerical career and entered the Capuchins in 1716.

After formation he became novice master at Mondovì, serving for thirteen years and guiding young friars through their preparation for religious life. His wider ministry included hearing confessions and assisting sick people. The biography locates his vocation in pastoral availability and community formation, rather than in the status of the offices he had declined. John Paul II canonized Ignatius of Santhià in 2002.
