Biography
Ignatius Maloyan was born in Mardin and prepared for the priesthood at Bzommar in Lebanon. After ordination and ministry in Egypt, he became Armenian Catholic archbishop of Mardin in 1911. He visited his people, supported the spiritual formation of priests, reopened schools and arranged repairs to churches.
In June 1915 he was imprisoned with other Christian men and tortured under accusations of concealing weapons. He refused demands to abandon his faith, encouraged fellow prisoners and ministered to them before they were killed. The institutional biography identifies his death on June 11 as martyrdom during the persecution of the Armenian Christian community. Leo XIV canonized Ignatius Maloyan in 2025.
