Biography
Ignatius Kim Che-jun was the father of Andrew Kim Tae-gon, who became Korea's first native Catholic priest. Ignatius supported the decision to send Andrew to Macao for priestly studies, despite the danger that sending him abroad created for the family.
He was arrested during the 1839 persecution and questioned both about his religion and his son's departure. Under torture he initially renounced his faith, then withdrew that denial after encouragement from Catholic fellow prisoners. He endured further beatings and was executed in Seoul in September 1839. His martyrdom preceded Andrew's by several years.
