Biography

Born Luca Antonio Pirozzo in Bisignano, Humilis practiced his faith while working in the fields and participating in a local confraternity. Although he desired religious life as a young man, circumstances delayed his entry for several years. He finally joined the Franciscan novitiate at Mesoraca and made his profession in 1610.

As an unordained friar he begged provisions, served at the community table, tended the garden and performed other manual tasks. He was remembered for helping poor people with what the community received. The source also preserves accounts of extraordinary prayer experiences, which belong to the devotional testimony about him and are not independently established here. John Paul II canonized Humilis of Bisignano in 2002.
