St. Hilda of Whitby

An Anglo-Saxon abbess who presided over the famous Synod of Whitby and ran one of the most important monasteries in England.

Biography

St. Hilda was a Northumbrian princess who became abbess of the double monastery of Whitby. Under her leadership, five future bishops were trained, and the monastery became one of England's greatest centers of learning. She hosted the Synod of Whitby in 664, which determined the date of Easter for the English Church.
