Biography
Henry Walpole was an English Jesuit priest whose vocation was influenced by Edmund Campion's martyrdom. He left legal studies for priestly formation, entered the Society of Jesus in 1584 and later served English Catholic soldiers abroad. He also worked at the English seminary in Valladolid.
He returned to England in 1593 but was arrested soon after landing in Yorkshire. Months of imprisonment and torture followed, including detention in the Tower of London. At his trial he refused the oath recognizing the monarch's religious supremacy. He was executed at York in 1595, after very little opportunity for ministry in his homeland.
