Biography

Hannibal Mary Di Francia lost his father in early childhood and developed a lasting concern for children without parental support. Before his ordination in 1878, an encounter with a nearly blind beggar brought him into contact with the poverty of Messina's Avignone neighborhood. He made that district the center of his ministry.

He established orphanages and connected education and practical care with prayer for vocations. This commitment shaped the Rogationists and the Daughters of Divine Zeal. His emphasis on praying for workers in the Church accompanied direct service to people already at his door. He died in 1927 and was canonized in 2004.
