Biography
Guido Maria Conforti entered the seminary near Parma as a boy. Illness delayed his ordination and prevented him from pursuing missionary work abroad. Ordained in 1888, he served in diocesan administration and in promoting the missions. In 1895 he founded the Xaverian Missionaries and later sent their first members to China.
He became archbishop of Ravenna, but poor health forced his resignation after two years. When his health improved he became bishop of Parma, serving for more than two decades. He promoted parish catechesis, prepared teachers of religion and visited even small parishes while continuing to form and support his missionary congregation. Benedict XVI canonized Guido Maria Conforti in 2011.
