Biography
Gregory II served as bishop of Rome from 715 to 731. His pontificate unfolded amid disputes over imperial taxation, the government of Italy and the place of sacred images in Christian worship. He resisted attempts by Byzantine imperial authority to determine the Church's teaching about those images.
Alongside these conflicts, Gregory supported the preaching of the Gospel among Germanic peoples. He commissioned Boniface for missionary work, connecting Rome's pastoral concerns with communities far beyond Italy. The Catholic calendar remembers him on February 11. His life shows how a pope's work could combine a difficult defense of ecclesial independence with encouragement for missionaries and the growth of local churches.
