Biography

Born Giuditta Vannini in Rome, Giuseppina lost both parents during childhood and was educated in an orphanage served by the Daughters of Charity. She qualified as a teacher and later attempted religious formation with that community. Poor health and repeated moves eventually led to her dismissal, leaving her to seek another way forward.

Work as a nursery teacher and time with relatives followed. A meeting with the Camillian priest Luigi Tezza in 1891 became decisive for her vocation. She founded the Daughters of Saint Camillus, a community dedicated to nursing and care for sick people, bringing her experience of dependence and education into a new ministry. Francis canonized Giuseppina Vannini in 2019.
