Biography
Giuseppe Allamano grew up near Turin and studied at the Salesian oratory of Valdocco under John Bosco’s spiritual guidance. Ordained in 1873, he worked in a parish and then in seminary formation. In 1880 he accepted responsibility for the neglected Consolata shrine and spent the rest of his life restoring its religious and pastoral activity.
He also promoted retreats, Catholic publications and attention to workers’ social concerns. Seeing the need for a missionary institute rooted in Turin, he founded the Consolata Missionaries and later a corresponding congregation of sisters. His work at the shrine and with young priests helped provide the setting for these new missionary communities. Francis canonized Giuseppe Allamano in 2024.
