Biography

Giovanni Battista Piamarta grew up in Brescia and lost his mother when he was young. His grandfather sent him to school and the parish oratory, where music became an enduring interest. He worked as an apprentice mattress maker before entering the seminary, and was ordained in 1865 after difficulties with health and finances.

His parish ministry included catechesis, care for poor and sick people, and sustained attention to young people. He founded the Holy Family of Nazareth congregation and the Humble Servants of the Lord. Their work joined Christian formation with learning a trade, offering young people practical preparation for earning a living. Benedict XVI canonized Giovanni Battista Piamarta in 2012.
