Biography

Giovanni Antonio Farina received his early education from a priest uncle because his village had no public school. He entered the Vicenza seminary and began teaching there while still a student. Ordained in 1827, he continued in education and parish ministry, paying particular attention to people with limited resources.

He founded the Teaching Sisters of Saint Dorothy, Daughters of the Sacred Hearts, to educate poor girls and assist people facing exclusion. His later episcopal ministry served Treviso and Vicenza. The educational experience of his youth and priesthood remained closely connected with his approach to doctrinal formation, pastoral care and practical charity. Francis canonized Giovanni Antonio Farina in 2014.
