Biography
Gaspar Bertoni entered seminary in Verona during a period of political and military upheaval. He assisted sick and wounded people before his ordination in 1800. As a priest, he organized religious and social formation for young people, though political suppression interrupted the early parish groups he established.
He also offered spiritual direction to emerging religious communities. His own foundation became the Congregation of the Sacred Stigmata, commonly called the Stigmatines. Long illness and practical limitations accompanied his work rather than preventing it altogether. Canonized in 1989, he is remembered for patient formation, charitable service and support for religious life amid instability.
