Biography
Gaetano Errico grew up in Secondigliano near Naples, where his parents worked at making pasta and weaving. Because his family could not pay for residential seminary study, he attended as an external student and walked there each day. During formation he visited sick people and gathered children for catechism before being ordained in 1815.
He served as a municipal teacher and parish priest, combining instruction with preaching, confessions and material assistance to sick neighbors. He founded the Missionaries of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, promoting retreats and Eucharistic contemplation. The congregation continued the pastoral priorities that had already developed during his years of study and local service. Benedict XVI canonized Gaetano Errico in 2008.
