Biography

Gaetano Catanoso came from a farming family in Calabria and was ordained in 1902. As parish priest at Pentidattilo, he lived among people facing poverty and limited access to education. He taught catechism, visited sick neighbors and opened a free evening school for young people unable to attend ordinary classes.

Later ministry in Reggio Calabria included hospital and prison chaplaincy and the formation of seminarians. His devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus was closely connected with Eucharistic prayer and practical care. He founded the Veronican Sisters of the Holy Face to support priests and neglected rural parishes. Benedict XVI canonized Gaetano Catanoso in 2005.
