Biography
Gabriel Lalemant was a French Jesuit priest who worked as a teacher and administrator before receiving permission to become a missionary. Poor health had complicated his repeated requests. He travelled to Quebec in 1646 and prepared for ministry by studying the language and customs of the people he would encounter.
In 1648 he went to Sainte-Marie, the mission headquarters in Huronia. His period of direct missionary work was short, and he became an assistant to John de Brébeuf shortly before their martyrdom. He died in 1649. His life connects educational service in France with the demanding preparation required for work in a different culture.
