Biography

François Jaccard was born at Onnion in the region of Annecy in France to a farming family. His early progress at school was difficult, and he briefly left seminary studies to return to agricultural work. He later resumed preparation for priesthood and traveled to Asia as a missionary. In Vietnam his knowledge of European languages and history brought him into service as a translator for Minh Mạng.

Jaccard's years in Vietnam included a prolonged period under confinement and official control. His work for the ruler did not protect him from a sentence imposed because of his Christianity. He was strangled in 1838. He was canonized in 1988.
