Biography

Francisco Coll y Guitart came from Gombrèn and studied in the Vic seminary before entering the Dominicans at Girona. Laws against religious communities forced him from his convent in 1835. Ordained the next year, he remained a Dominican while serving parishes because the houses of his province could not reopen.

He preached popular missions and retreats across Catalonia, seeking reconciliation during periods of civil conflict. He encouraged the Rosary through confraternities and small publications. He also founded the Dominican Sisters of the Annunciation, extending his concern for Christian formation through a congregation devoted to education. His vocation continued despite the loss of ordinary convent life. Benedict XVI canonized Francisco Coll y Guitart in 2009.
