Biography

Francis Trần Văn Trung came from Phan Xá in Quảng Trị and followed his father into military service. He married and had four children. His earlier Catholic practice was ordinary rather than unusually fervent. An examination scandal exposed payments made by him and fellow officers to obtain favorable treatment, and he was imprisoned for bribery.

During the 1858 conflict, prisoners were offered release if they volunteered for military service. Francis was willing to serve but refused the further demand to step over a cross. The resulting death sentence named that refusal alongside his earlier punishment. He arranged for household debts to be paid and cared about his children's future. Beheaded in 1858, he was canonized in 1988.
