Biography

Francis Solano entered the Franciscan order in Spain and became known for care of sick and poor people. His superiors eventually sent him to the Americas, where he traveled as a missionary and served as superior of the community at Lima. The Catholic account describes a ministry directed both toward indigenous peoples and Spanish colonists.

His preaching reached both indigenous communities and the colonists whose conduct could also require reform. Catholic accounts remember him for patience and humility in the religious communities he served. He died at Lima in 1610. Later traditions include extraordinary language abilities and miracles, alongside the more ordinary record of travel, preaching and Franciscan leadership.
