Biography

Francis Đỗ Minh Chiểu, also known as Đỗ Văn Chiểu, came from Trung Lễ in Nam Định. He entered church service while young, studied Latin and theology, and made profession in the Dominican Third Order. As an assistant to Bishop Dominic Henares, he accompanied the bishop on journeys to Catholic communities and shared the difficulties of hiding during persecution.

Francis and Henares were captured after an earlier attempt to find refuge and were taken to Nam Định in 1838. Francis repeatedly refused to step across a cross despite punishment and pressure from officials. He was beheaded before the bishop, and they died in the same episode. He was canonized in 1988.
