Biography
Francis Borgia moved from a life of Spanish court service and family responsibilities into the Society of Jesus. He married Leonor de Castro, raised eight children and served as duke of Gandía. After his wife's death, he prepared to become a Jesuit while arranging his children's affairs.
He relinquished his title and was ordained a priest. Elected the Jesuits' third superior general in 1565, he oversaw schools, missions and the developing organization of the order. He died in Rome in 1572 after illness interrupted a journey. His biography illustrates a vocation that developed through several distinct stages of life.
