Biography

Finnian of Clonard, also called Finnian of Leinster, was an abbot and teacher in early medieval Ireland. Catholic tradition connects his Christian formation with the followers of Patrick and describes a period in Wales before his work at Clonard. These journeys belong to the received account of his religious formation.

He founded monasteries and taught a large community of monks. Clonard became an important center within the wider growth of Irish monastic and missionary life. The Martyrology remembers him principally as the founder and teacher of these communities. His commemoration is December 12. Because the Catholic source gives different death years, the entry identifies his period without selecting one exact year as certain.
