Biography

Filippo Smaldone grew up in Naples and began helping deaf people while still preparing for the priesthood. Ordained in 1871, he combined parish ministry with catechesis and visits to sick people. Experience with deaf students led him to seek educational methods and a stable institution suited to their needs.

In Lecce he opened an institute with Lorenzo Apicella and gathered women who became the Salesian Sisters of the Sacred Hearts. Their work expanded to Bari and included children who were blind, orphaned or abandoned. Smaldone also formed the sisters and continued to hear confessions and serve other local communities. Benedict XVI canonized Filippo Smaldone in 2006.
