Biography

Born Manuel Míguez in Galicia, Faustino studied at a shrine school in Ourense. A Piarist priest introduced him to the educational work of Joseph Calasanz, helping him recognize a vocation as both priest and teacher. He entered the Piarists in Madrid in 1850 and was ordained in 1856.

An assignment in Cuba expanded his experience of teacher formation and encouraged his interest in natural science and the study of plants. He devoted many decades to education while continuing pastoral service. He also founded the Daughters of the Divine Shepherdess, extending Christian education through a new community of women. Francis canonized Faustino Míguez in 2017.
