Biography

Fabiola belonged to a prominent Roman family and experienced a troubled marital history before undertaking public penance. She then directed her wealth toward the care of sick people and hospitality for pilgrims. Jerome, who knew her, left an account of her life, making his testimony important to the Catholic memory of her change of life and charitable work.

She also spent time in the Holy Land before returning to Rome. Her later life combined penance with sustained assistance for people in need, including those requiring medical care. She died in 399, having devoted the resources of a formerly wealthy household to charitable purposes. Jerome's testimony linked her memory with the wider Christian community of his generation.
