Biography

Eustochium was the daughter of Paula of Rome. She accompanied her mother to the Holy Land and shared the religious life associated with Jerome at Bethlehem. The Catholic account places study and meditation on the Bible at the center of their community, giving Eustochium a place in the history of women's monastic learning.

She succeeded Paula in leadership of the monastery and continued its life of study and prayer. The community's close relationship with Jerome connected the women with the work of biblical interpretation for which he became known. Eustochium died at Bethlehem in the early fifth century, remembered individually as a religious woman rather than solely as her mother's companion.
