Biography

Eugene de Mazenod spent much of his youth as a refugee in Italy after the French Revolution forced his family into exile. Returning to France, he encountered a damaged Church and a family whose expectations differed from his developing vocation. He entered Saint-Sulpice and was ordained in 1811.

His ministry led to the foundation of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate and later service as bishop of Marseille. The Vatican biography emphasizes charity within the religious community and zeal for those it served. Canonized in 1995, Eugene's life shows how displacement and disappointed ambitions could become part of a sustained pastoral calling.
