Biography
Étienne-Théodore Cuenot was born at Le Bélieu near Besançon in France, the eldest child in a large farming family. Because the church had been closed, his baptism took place in a building being used for worship. His family experienced financial difficulty and moved for work before returning home. A parish priest recognized his interest in study and encouraged his desire for missionary priesthood.
Cuenot later served as a bishop in Vietnam through years of persecution. Eventually captured, he was transported in a cage to Bình Định during severe weather. His health deteriorated in prison, and he died there in 1861. He was canonized in 1988.
