Biography

Emmanuel Nguyễn Văn Triệu was born at Phủ Cam near Huế in a family connected with public service. His father died during conflict with the Tây Sơn forces, and Emmanuel initially entered military life. After traveling north he encountered a missionary, received Christian instruction, and was baptized. He eventually prepared for priesthood and served Catholics in Eastern Tonkin.

Emmanuel later sought permission to visit his elderly mother, who was ill and living in poverty. Back near Huế, he was unfamiliar with local hiding arrangements when officials began searching the Catholic communities. He was arrested and refused to renounce Christianity. He died as a martyr in 1798. He was canonized in 1988.
