Biography

Emmanuel Lê Văn Phụng lived at Cù Lao Giêng, also called Đầu Nước, in a Catholic community on the Mekong. He married Anna Của, and their household included nine children. As a village official and Catholic community leader, he helped provide buildings for the parish and religious sisters. He personally taught children catechism, welcomed priests, assisted poor people, and visited the sick.

Emmanuel's home and community offered refuge to clergy during persecution. He was arrested with Father Peter Đoàn Công Quý, whom he had sheltered. Both men were taken to Châu Đốc and died in 1859. Their remains were returned to the Catholic community. Emmanuel was beatified with the priest in 1906 and canonized by John Paul II in 1988.
