Biography

Elizabeth Chong Chong-hye was the sister of Paul Chong Ha-sang and daughter of Cecilia Yu So-sa. After their father's martyrdom and the confiscation of family property, she helped support the household through sewing and spinning. She also taught people preparing for baptism and assisted the missionaries who visited their home.

When persecution intensified, Elizabeth helped provide food and clothing to poor and imprisoned Catholics. Arrested with her mother and brother in 1839, she continued to comfort fellow prisoners and assist them materially. She refused to renounce her faith and was executed in December. Her contribution joins practical family support with the wider work of the Korean Church.
